Abstract: Effective communication during shift changes, known as handovers, is essential for promoting patient safety in healthcare settings. This study explores the role of nurses in enhancing patient safety during shift changes through the implementation of structured handover protocols, with a focus on the SBAR framework. Using a qualitative approach, semi-structured interviews and focus groups were conducted with nurses in a tertiary hospital setting. Thematic analysis revealed barriers such as time constraints, high patient acuity, and environmental distractions, as well as facilitators including standardized tools and team collaboration. The findings highlight the need for consistent adoption of structured handover protocols to improve patient safety outcomes.
