Abstract: Neodymium tartrate crystals in the form of spherulites were synthesized in silica gel by using a controlled diffusion system at ambient temperature. The influence of growth parameters such as reactant concentration, gel pH, and gel ageing on the size and nucleation density of the crystals was studied. The mechanisms of crystallization for spherulites are described. Three distinct mechanisms were found to be operative during the crystallization process. Under all conditions the crystals attain spherulitic morphology. This investigation enhances the understanding on spherulitic growth in general and that of neodymium tartrate in particular
