Abstract:
The study investigates earthquake vulnerability and preparedness in Patna, Bihar, revealing critical insights into community resilience and disaster management. Conducted among a predominantly young population, the research highlights significant infrastructure and preparedness challenges. An alarming 84% of respondents acknowledged that their buildings do not meet earthquake resistance norms, while only 47% demonstrated awareness about earthquake management strategies.
The survey uncovered substantial vulnerability, with 58% experiencing moderate earthquake severity and 49% suffering property losses. Psychological impacts were profound, with 32% reporting panic and 14% experiencing local insecurity. Institutional response was notably weak, with only 14% of respondents satisfied with government agencies, and primary assistance predominantly coming from local communities (58%).
Geographically, Patna is situated in Zone IV, classified as a severe earthquake-prone region by the National Centre of Seismology. Historical evidence, including significant earthquakes in 1988 and 2015, underscores the city's seismic risk. Over 80% of buildings are considered non-earthquake resilient, potentially exposing inhabitants to catastrophic risks during major tremors.
The research emphasizes the urgent need for comprehensive disaster preparedness, infrastructure retrofitting, and enhanced community awareness to mitigate potential earthquake-related devastation in the region.
